The Seagull by Anton Chekhov

pre-show environment and Constantine's Pre showRiley Merrill

This is work done for an in class project. The concept being that the only music heard throughout the show is because of Constantine. The sample above is an environmental soundscape serving as pre-show for the production itself that fades into music that is used as pre-show for his play.

Act III TransitionRiley Merrill

Environmental sounds are used in transitions to demonstrate the time of year and changing of seasons. The Act III transition in particular contains a gun shot because it is in the transition from Act II to Act III that Peter attempts suicide as heard from outside the house.  This is an environmental soundscape with a gunshot covered with a low pass filter.

The next time music is heard is not until the last act when Constantine is playing the waltz off stage and over curtain call when the waltz is played again but this time it's "empty." The music is disturbed because now that the music is gone from there lives, it's wrong.

Soundscape and Underscoring Project

As part of a Sound Design class we were required to create soundscapes for three pictures and one picture was required to have an original underscore.

Music:  String Quartet No. 2: III. Notturno by Alexander Borodin, performed live by Dover Quartet for Brooklyn Classical.

For this Picture, I layered a string quartet with a low pass filter on top of restaurant ambiance with a recording of an actress saying the line, "Fuck you, Carol." and I cut the table flipping sound and people gasping from "Psycho Kid Ruins Thanksgiving Dinner," on YouTube.

This was my original underscore using Music Maker Jam to create a sunrise over the Vatican including environmental sounds such as the river running and traffic that fades in to signify the start of the day.

Music:  "Casey's Song" From the Whiplash Motion Picture Soundtrack Composed by Justin Hurwitzz.

This final picture I decided to use the idea that the man with the guitar is exiting an older, rundown jazz club but is heard from the point of view of the person taking the picture, and then it ends with the door closing. There is the sound of music coming from the club, echoing down the street, traffic in the snow heard from a distance as there is no traffic in the picture and finally the footsteps of the guitar player walking away. The song has both a reverb and a low pass filter on it, and the traffic at a lower volume level then the other tracks.

Commercial Underscoring Project

For this assignment I was required to change the underscoring of a commercial. I chose to use the HEINZ Ketchup 2016 Weiner Stampede Commercial and changed the underscoring to The Ride of the Valkyries to create a possibly even more comedic effect then the original commercial.

The original commercial is on the left and the commercial with my underscoring is on the right.
